Thank you for reading the Frequently Asked Questions!Since many people have the same questions as you do, we're delighted that you've chosen to have a look here to get some of your questions answered. Here are some of the questions we've asked of ourselves most often:
Are you planning to split off from the Barony?Absolutely not! Many of the people organizing to form this are very active in the Barony as we speak. Others were not active for no other reason than because of the difficulty of attending Baronial functions. We are excited and proud to be able to expand the reach of the Barony in this area and are delighted to have such a close relationship with our parent Barony.
Why form a Canton? Why not just form a household and/or volunteer to host Baronial activities closer to our location?Very good question which has several very good answers. Here are some answers from different members in the proposed canton: 1) The SCA has the following benefits to a formal canton which are not available to a household: ...A canton can host a sanctioned SCA event under their own banner. Access to numerous resources is the largest advantage a recognized group has. Aside from the financial backing we would be able receive from our parent group, it also allows us to warrant our officers and put them in their prospective "loops". This not only can we give our officers more recognition for their effort outside the group but through that chain of command in their areas they can always have someone to pose questions to or get support from if needed in a large undertaking, (hint hint, like a good event). The officer structure of the Canton also can get people ready to take higher positions as experience with the responsibility and reporting of those positions grows, providing a pool in wich future higher officers can be born. Finally, the ability to augment the parent group with sites for remote practices and events for which people might not trek into the city in this case, strengthening the parent group by getting is people more involved in the periphery of its lands. Remember if the canton's numbers grow, so do the Barony's! 2) Forming a canton will
...Increase leadership instead of spreading existing
Baronial leadership thinner. All of the leadership in the SCA is
volunteer, which means that the more help the merrier! This will also give
additional people the opportunity to try their hand at leadership on a small
scale without
removing any of the existing Baronial officers. 3) It's Fun!
