Learn how to make garb from our own Laurel.

Lady Elenora the Tilemaker has graciously opened her home for Garb workshops run by our own Laurel, Uncle Rashid, master of garb and master of millinery.

These workshops are scheduled week by week; please check with Lady Elenora or Uncle Rashid to confirm the date and the project.

Childen of all ages are welcome.

The workshop starts at 6:30pm and runs until approximately 10:00pm.

Click here for pictures from a previous workshop.

Please Bring:

Fabric, trim, thread, fasteners, etc. for that evening's project
Sewing Machine (optional)
Notepaper/writing implement
Snack and/or Beverage to share
Printouts suggested from here

Current Projects:

Eyelets - How to embroider eyelets for lacing holes.

Gamurra - Construction of the bodice of the Gamurra (underdress worn over the chemise)

Italian Renaissance Chemise - worn under the Gamurra as underwear.

1480's Florentine Women - Inspirational art used as basis for the next several month's classes

Garb In Art Worksheet - worksheet for analyzing art for the purposes of creating garb that looks similar to the art

Florentine Women Compsite - Composite of Florentine women from different frescos and portraits

I am planning a series of classes that will allow us to produce new garb for Yule Revel.
The style I am planning on is an Italian Renaissance gown as seen in the frescoes of Ghirlandaio, in Florence, 1485.
The same pattern can also be used to produce a Marcele de Montsegur-style gothic fitted dress (can you say bust support?)
The gothic fitted dress can be worn alone, in layers or under the Burgundian style gown, which is quite easy to make.

Men's garb of the corresponding period will be covered if there is a desire.

In this series of classes we will cover draping a pattern in muslin by pin fitting and transfering that pattern to paper.
We will learn to line a bodice and make hand-worked eyelets.
We can also learn cartridge pleating if enough people are interested.

INTERPRETATION OF GARB IN ART (1.5 hours) We will learn how to look at period art and glean useful information about what the men and women in the pictures are wearing, and how to apply that to the garb we make. Please print out and bring the sample picture in the files section. This is a picture of the style of dress we will be working on this fall. Also bring other examples of period art to work with, if desired. EVALUATION OF GARB BOOKS AND OTHER SOURCES(1 hour) Bring your garb books and learn how to evaluate their usefullness and authenticity! No punches will be pulled! Learn which authors are the best, and which are the worst! We can also evaluate patterns and pattern companies. You must bring an example of pattern for it to be evaluated.

1480's Florentine Women - Inspirational art used as basis for the next several month's classes

Past Projects:

Moghul Women - Inspirational art used as basis for the following four garments

  • Moghul Kamiz - filmy undergarment worn under the choli; use cotton gauze, filmy silk, or chiffon in white or pastel

  • Choli - cropped top

  • Salwar - pants

  • Choga Worksheet - worksheet to take measurements for the choga pattern below:

  • Choga - outer jacket; use pretty brocades and patterned fabric; use more fabric for drapier fabrics than for stiffer ones.

Tunics - three patterns based on three extant garments; best in linen or silk - cotton does not drape quite right but will work

Directions:

Lady Elenora the Tilemaker (mka Ellen Leone)

Take your best route to 476 (the blue route).
Exit at Route 3 and go West on Route 3 (all the exit numbers have changed recently so I will make no attempt to reference the exit number).
Once you have cleared the 476/route3 interchange, take the third right turn (aka the first street after the first light) and
turn right onto Ferguson Avenue. (If you pass a Pathmark, you went the wrong direction on route 3.)
Leone household is after the first stop sign, 6th house on the left.
