Monday September 8, 2003

Present: Jamila al-Bhakailiya, Deiniol ap Gwrgwst, William Graham, Marrun Campbell Graham, Elenora the Tilemaker, Magdalena, Bob Leone, Bilgisayar, Fiona, Keegan McNaughton, Melodie de l’ours Blanc McNaughton

Meeting called to order at 7:52pm

Officer’s reports:

Seneschal

After a long discussion with Baroness Katherine, everything is done and we will be presented with our scroll on Saturday at the royal court at Kingdom Crusades. The paperwork is all in order. Baroness Katriona apparently has a long history of delaying paperwork; Katherine Barr had no idea that our paperwork even existed. Once she got our packet (right before Pennsic), all Katherine needed was a letter from Lorcan and Sheherazade because the letter from Vicar Philadelphia Brown was no longer valid. Lorcan &Scheherazade oblidged.

We are going to try to get a dinner together at our cabin afterwards. We requested a cabin in conjunction with the Hounds of Denmark and Tadcaster Militia.

William – about Pennsic – can we get more of the canton together next year.

Exchequer

We have $400 in the bank; approx $135 in cash that Jamilia turned in from the May Demo; approx $200 in outstanding expenses. We have to get warranted to get it paid out. This will happen after the king and queen bless our incipient canton at Kingdom Crusades.

Chatelain

No event in October for Media Fair – it’s already booked up and they don’t usually do this for non-profits.

We will continue to do May Day, which was May 10 this year; and will immediately follow the Beltane Brew and Brawl.

Please on the web page put “interested people please talk to William Graham.” On the front page.

Elenora – all press releases can be sent to Magdalena for inclusion in the News of Delaware County. Press releases must all be approved by the Seneschal. Reporting, according to newspaper, may not be pre-approved by the subject. Pictures must always have a release (which we have on file).

Mistress of Arts and Sciences

Rashid’s workshop starts again on the 9th. Tomorrow is theory and pattern stuff. See webpage.

Mention on the website about banners. Elenora will do a banner workshop. 2 parts – painter banner – 2 hours; 2nd part appliqué. Elenora needs a picture 8x11 or 4x6. Painted ones, we need the right colors – acrylic paint in the small bottles; show up early to go shop at AC Moore. We will fix the paints so we will be able to take the banner out in the rain. Painted banners were done in period – esp floor cloths, which were waterproof. Walmart has pack of 8 fabric pens for $8, good for detail. Latex exterior paint for the backing of the canvas. This discussion will move to the e-mail list.

Cellach is doing classes at yule. Need teachers!

Want to make baldrics and or tabards for the canton. Class or day workshop. This will be taken to the e-mail list; favors too. Maybe Banners and Baldrics by KC.

William - brewers guild is second Wednesday of each month. All are invited. This Wednesday is one of the biggest meetings because William is stepping down. Going over a lot of rules and ranking. www.celticcockbrewersguild.com

The canton wants to have a mead class.

Herald

The device that was already voted on was the black and gold one. The border embattled in our other favorite turns out to be in conflict. Deiniol will send the newest version to the web page.

Bilgisayar – as far as banners go – does only the official one need the laurel? The device needs the laurel but we can register a badge or more.

Motion Keegan; William second: have the badge as a yellow background with a single black squirrel; Tabards two squirrels; baldric one squirrel; favors/pennant flags – black with gold acorn. Motion passes with one opposed.

Knight Marshal

Low turnout from fighters; we usually have two but recently have four. We were invited to Caer Adamant’s fighter practice; canton members are advised to stay out of the politics. Tues night still on; working on indoor site – working with DCCC (Keegan) and fencers too. Fencers might be easier. Also DCCC or Penn State or Widener is prime location for recruiting.

Webmistress

Yule page is up; E-mail me text or pictures for any page and I will put them up. Keegan has gotten great feedback on our website.

Chronicler

Status soon – we need to have a format for newsletter; Marrun has a couple programs that make newsletters. Please send articles and drawings to Marrun. Newsletter will be published mainly by e-mail; mailed ones can be charged a subscription price. Latest policy is that we don’t need to charge a subscription price for e-mail versions.

Not-yet-Marshal-of-Fence

Not here – he is this close to being warranted. Thursdays in Philadelphia; Monday in Hartshorndale(?); Wednesday iron Bog; Eventually Tuesdays here in the canton, but maybe Sunday; will depend on Geoffrey’s schedule.

Special committees

Yule

Lady Melodie needs help.

Elenora wants to do pewter casting tokens. Can we get money to do this and how much? Elenora will put together a proposal. Pewter can be exchanged for barter (beer or mead). A workshop is underway! This is lead-free pewter - tin and Antimony.

Hall seats 250.

Do we have a budget for yule yet? Not one available for general consumption yet.

Volunteers Magdalena will help serve.

Bilgisayar has SCA road signs. They are personally his he is loaning them, not donating.

Yule money does not go in the canton’s coffers, but we will expect help from the barony for the Beltane event.

Site fees will be $12 adult $6 child; feast $8 adult $5 child.

A&S classes; dance classes; merchants are booked; there may be an A&S competition, but that’s Cellach’s baby. Genevieve won last year and is therefore by tradition responsible for running A&S competition for this year.

Beltane

Need a committee. We have 7 months. Tentative 30th April-1 May; Keegan’s birthday! Bonfire gets lit Fri and burns through Sat night.  Giant feast on Sat – pig roast.

Had an additional plot for equestrian event but the equestrian group is not official yet and not insured. We may use that area for merchants instead.  Merchants are already being contacted for this event (esp middle eastern vendors).

Porta-potties are reserved or in progress.

Organizational meeting will be next week for this event’s committee.

Marrun has a lead for a Druid, but we will be very careful not to insult any religions by impersonating them.

The East Kingdom Brewer’s guild has been notified; and brewer’s university plan is underway.

Old Business

Common Pavilion

talking about carports; talking to Adolphus – we can have use of that household pavilion if we need for the brew and brawl. We can get a top like that 25x25 for $175: make your own poles and ropes. Also good for Pennsic! Caer Adamant has a period pavilion that they are selling but that’s about $1000.

Chamberlain

Tabled a vote for Corwyn to be chamberlain. Vote is still tabled; we still have no stuff to track.

New Business

Pirates Samhain/ Investiture event

We have sign ups. Damiana is the troll. Volunteers also welcome!  Contact Deiniol.

AGP program at Indian Lane Elementary

Will have a unit on the middle ages Jan-March. Need teachers/presenters in any subject – armour, fighting, fencing, embroidery, garb, headgear, footwear, food, arts, calligraphy, heraldry, artwork; etc.   Contact Jamila/Jeannette.

Open Connections

Artist in residence program. Lots of land – in Edgemont by the dairy queen on West Chester pike. Would like to have a demo. Could be a Saturday or something. They have a new loom and want people who can demonstrate it.  Contact Elenora.

Fall Event?

The Bates’ of Arasapha farms would be open to a fall event. They offered to build us a castle.  Contact Keegan.
